Dreaming Southern
Driving four children from Kentucky to California should be a quick trip, but with Lila Mae Wooten at the wheel, nothing turns out quite as expected. Lila Mae's husband has given her detailed instructions for getting the family across the country as soon as possible to meet him and to escape the creditors, but Lila Mae is not about to miss the scenic wonder of Route 66. Towing a trailer stuffed with second-hand furniture, Lila Mae is a terror on the road. From gas station attendants to distant relatives, everyone the travelers meet makes their journey a little more circuitous, but things threaten to stall out permanently when they run into a Native American waitress with an iron lung daughter, a pyromaniac son, and a disgruntled, gun-toting husband. Newcomer Linda Bruckheimer has woven an extraordinary yarn filled with unforgettable characters guaranteed to cause nostalgia in those who remember the 50s and jealousy in those who do not.
